Background of the Study :
Security in secondary schools is of paramount importance to ensure a safe learning environment. Traditional security systems often rely on manual surveillance and static cameras, which can be limited in scope and response time. In Jalingo LGA, Taraba State, secondary schools face increasing security challenges due to rising incidents of vandalism, unauthorized entry, and other security threats. The integration of IoT-based smart surveillance systems offers an innovative approach to address these challenges by providing real-time monitoring, automated threat detection, and enhanced situational awareness. This study proposes the design and implementation of an IoT-based smart surveillance system that incorporates high-resolution cameras, motion detectors, and facial recognition software to monitor school premises continuously (Ibrahim, 2023). The system will be capable of transmitting data to a centralized control center, where advanced analytics can detect unusual activities and trigger immediate alerts. This real-time capability enables prompt intervention by security personnel, thereby reducing response times and mitigating potential threats. Furthermore, the system will integrate with existing security protocols and offer remote access via mobile applications, allowing school administrators to monitor security status on the go. Previous studies have demonstrated that smart surveillance systems can significantly enhance the overall safety of educational institutions by automating routine security tasks and providing detailed surveillance data (Olu, 2024). By adapting these technologies to the specific needs and infrastructural constraints of secondary schools in Jalingo LGA, this study aims to develop a cost-effective, scalable, and user-friendly solution that improves school security. The expected outcome is a robust system that not only deters criminal activity but also fosters a secure environment conducive to learning (Adeniyi, 2025).

Statement of the Problem :
Secondary schools in Jalingo LGA, Taraba State, are confronted with persistent security issues due to the limitations of traditional surveillance methods. Manual monitoring is inefficient and prone to human error, resulting in delayed responses to security incidents. The absence of an integrated, real-time surveillance system increases the vulnerability of school premises to unauthorized access and vandalism. Additionally, the lack of advanced analytics in existing systems means that potential threats are often not identified until it is too late. The reliance on outdated technologies further exacerbates these challenges, leaving schools with inadequate tools to protect students and staff. This situation calls for the implementation of an IoT-based smart surveillance system that automates security monitoring and provides real-time alerts for suspicious activities. Such a system is essential for ensuring a proactive security approach, reducing the incidence of crime, and enhancing the overall safety of the school environment. By addressing these gaps, the proposed study seeks to develop a solution that not only improves immediate response times but also generates actionable intelligence for long-term security planning. The research will also explore the challenges of system integration, data privacy, and user training to ensure that the solution is practical and sustainable in resource-constrained educational settings (Ibrahim, 2023; Olu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To design an IoT-based smart surveillance system for secondary schools.

  • To implement real-time monitoring and automated threat detection features.

  • To evaluate the system’s effectiveness in enhancing school security and reducing response times.

Research Questions:

  • How effective is the IoT-based surveillance system in detecting security threats?

  • What are the key benefits of real-time monitoring in a school environment?

  • How can the system be optimized for ease of use and data privacy?

Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it develops a smart surveillance system using IoT to enhance security in secondary schools. By providing continuous, real-time monitoring and automated threat detection, the system improves response times and overall safety. The findings will inform security protocols in resource-limited educational settings and offer a scalable model for improved school safety (Adeniyi, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the design, implementation, and evaluation of the IoT-based smart surveillance system in secondary schools within Jalingo LGA, Taraba State, and does not cover other security applications outside educational settings.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Smart Surveillance System: An automated system that uses IoT technologies to monitor and analyze security data in real time.

  2. Motion Detector: A sensor that detects movement within its range and triggers an alert.

  3. Facial Recognition: A technology that identifies individuals by analyzing facial features.
